THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MUSIC YOU CHOOSE

Picture
Being a music minister is not easy.  Your job is not just providing music for everyone in your congregation; it's ministering to them as well.   It's impossible to learn everyone's name and know about each of them, when you are positioned in the balcony or in a transept before the Divine Service starts and still there after it finishes.  Many people arrive just as the Service begins and then head for the exit right after the Benediction.

So how do you get to know your people?  And ultimately minister to them?

It is known that when speech fails, music can still communicate.  When a comatose person in a hospital room can no longer converse, often they can still be reached by singing a favorite hymn or song.   Sometimes they will even sing along with you because music communicates longer than speech.

The music that you play can make an impression, often deeper than you will realize.   That puts in perspective how important your choice of music is and how important your playing is to everyone in your congregation.  You are choosing and playing hymns and music that can last beyond speech.

Choose wisely, prepare well, and play to the best of your ability because your music is eternally important to those that listen.
